Where to look for a kot in Mons?

Mons is a small student city: its historic centre, inside the boulevards, is crossed on foot in about twenty minutes, and most campuses are close to it. A quick tour.

Before choosing

Your classes. The University of Mons has several sites: the Plaine de Nimy just north of the boulevards (sciences, medicine, big lecture halls) and, in or at the edge of the centre, Warocqué (business and economics), Rosa Parks (social sciences and humanities, law), Polytech (Houdain, Dolez, and the Joncquois south of the boulevards) and Architecture (rue d'Havré). UCLouvain Mons and HELHa are to the east on chaussée de Binche, beyond the boulevards, HEH is to the north on avenue Maistriau, near the Plaine de Nimy, and ARTS² is in the centre.

Your commute. Inside the walls of Mons, everything is done on foot. The TEC's City'R and City'O urban lines loop around the centre, and the other bus lines leave from the station to the neighbourhoods and the neighbouring municipalities. The new station, open since the end of 2024, links Mons to Brussels and the rest of the country.

Your nights out. The cafés and student nights out gather around the Grand-Place and in the streets leading to it.

Inside the walls

Mons intra-muros is the heart of the city, inside the boulevards that follow the line of the old ramparts. This is where most students live: the shops, the cafés and most campuses are a few minutes on foot.

Around the Grand-Place

The historic centre, around the Grand-Place and the belfry: the liveliest, with the cafés, restaurants and shops. Often old housing, in houses divided into kots.

The north, towards rue de Nimy

Between the Grand-Place and the northern boulevard, around rue de Nimy. A good balance between quiet and closeness to the centre, right next to the Plaine de Nimy and several student residences.

Around the station

West of the centre, around the new station. Handy if you often go home at weekends, with the centre a few minutes on foot.

Outside the boulevards

Beyond the boulevards, housing is often bigger and quieter, sometimes cheaper, at the cost of slightly longer trips to the centre.

The east, towards UCLouvain Mons

On the other side of the boulevards to the east, around the Waux-Hall park and the UCLouvain Mons campus. Residential and green, ideal if your classes are on that campus. From the station, TEC line 22 reaches UCLouvain (Bascule stop) in about ten minutes, with extra direct shuttles in the morning and late afternoon, which go on to HELHa at certain times.

The west, towards Les Grands Prés

West of the station, around the Grands Prés shopping centre and Mons Expo. More commercial than residential, but well served by bus.

The neighbouring municipalities

Jemappes, Cuesmes, Nimy, Havré and the other former municipalities of Mons: more space and lower rents, linked to the centre and the station by TEC buses.
